History of the Caribou Trails Run

Caribou Trails

Vancouver Harley Davidson dealer Fred Deeley is given credit for starting the “300 Miler” in 1930. It was a true test of man and machine in those days, held on gravel and dirt roads, with many riders finishing long after dark. Photos of the 1938 start, taken at Stanley Park, show a long line of smiling riders on Indians, Harleys and British bikes, wearing leather helmets and peaked caps, all with numbered vests bearing a sponsor’s name (“Export”).

In 1948 it was re-named the “Caribou Trails”, and went through many changes over the years. Often it was held as a one-day enduro, sometimes a two-day ride, or a ride plus a field meet the next day. For a few years in the late 1960’s it had simultaneous starts in Vancouver and Bellingham, finishing 300 miles later at an all-night campout and party. A high point of the rally was the 50th anniversary in 1980, when 702 riders, many with passengers, braved the rain soaked streets.

The Caribou was conceived as a challenging event, and has always retained the tradition of a 300 mile endurance ride.

Event Comments:
2021 91st Annual GVMC Caribou Trails Run Report
To keep with the long tradition of the GVMC Caribou Trails Run and to have our first Ride during Covid Protocols the GVMC presented the 91st Annual Covid Caribou Trails Fun Ride which was an abbreviated version of the Caribou Trails Run in the lower mainland due to Covid-19 and all the B.C. fires, on Sunday August 22, 2021. It was a Poker Run not a timed event ending back at the GVMC Clubhouse for Refreshments.

It was a great day which started out cloudy and threatening rain. There was some rain and slippery roads in the Chilliwack area, but the moisture kept the dust down. By the end of the day, it was sunny and bright and an enjoyable end to the Ride.

The event had 17 signups. Some members worked and signed up in order to support the Club and the event. There were 25 people in attendance at the event including workers.

Sign up and Continental Breakfast (Muffins, Fruit and Tea and Coffee) was from 7:00am to 8:00am with the Ride leaving shortly after 8:00am after a Rider’s Meeting. Riders returned between 3:00pm to 4:00pm after doing 5 check points two at the Club and three out on the road to build their Poker Hands. Lots of camaraderie and sharing ride stories with refreshments (Build your own Sandwiches, Salad and Chips with Cookies, Brownies, Muffins and Fruit for Dessert) served with Covid-19 protocols while waiting for all riders to return for Prize Presentations.

Winners of the Poker Run:
1st Place – Brock Kinneard with a Flush
2nd Place – Donna Serne with Three of a Kind
3rd Place – Barry Cargo with a Pair of Kings

A huge thank you to all the helpers - we couldn’t have done it without you! Checkers: Jim B., Dave S., Efrian L., Rob C., Margaret C., Brock K, and Steve and Kathy P.. Refreshments: Lois W., Margaret C., Cheryl A. and Wendy L.

General Organization and Clean Up: A big thank you to our President Bill T. who arrived at 6:00am, held down the fort while we shopped for the end of Run food and stayed for cleanup and lockup.

2022 will bring back the Traditional Caribou Trails format being an overnight timed event. Hope to see everyone out for the 2022 92nd Annual GVMC Caribou Trails Run.
